What is dental cleaning?
Basically, dental cleaning includes regular cleaning, deep cleaning—which involves numbing the patient—and surgical cleaning, where we perform surgery to open the gum and clean your teeth. Dental cleaning primarily removes surface tartar and keeps your gums healthy to prevent periodontal disease. If you do have periodontal disease, we need to take further steps, including deep cleaning and surgical cleaning.
How often should I get a dental cleaning?
For people with healthy teeth and gums, if you routinely brush and floss, every six months should be sufficient. If you don't, and have periodontal disease, especially deep pockets, you need more frequent cleanings. We suggest every three or four months. Healthy teeth don't require frequent visits; it's a bit uncomfortable but tolerable. Occasionally, patients with sensitive teeth may feel pain, but in such cases, we can numb the patient to ensure a successful cleaning. If you have gum disease, you need to come here often—every three to four months. If you don't have periodontal disease, six months will be good enough.
What happens during a dental cleaning?
Normally, 30 to 40 minutes is sufficient. First, the hygienist will check your teeth based on the X-ray, and the doctor will review the X-ray. We check your teeth to ensure there are no visible issues. This is the most critical part. We're not just cleaning your teeth; we want to ensure your teeth are in good condition. The hygienist can remove superficial tartar or anything not more than 3 mm under your gum. If more cleaning is needed, they will report it and provide higher-level cleaning. The instruments are designed not to damage the hard tissue of your teeth, and because tartar is softer than teeth, they can separate it from your teeth.
Dental cleanings and exams are two of the most basic yet important preventive treatments we provide at our office. Each time you visit our dental practice for a checkup, we will provide a professional teeth cleaning and dental exam to help your smile stay healthy. During your cleaning and exam, our dental team will:
- Clean your teeth by removing any plaque or tartar (also called dental calculus), which can lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease
- Floss and polish your teeth for a healthy, bright smile
- Examine your smile for signs of any damaging dental conditions or diseases
How do you handle sensitive teeth?
If you have sensitive teeth, we can simply use Sensodyne and sometimes apply fluoride. Furthermore, if you haven't had a cleaning in a long time, when the hygienist removes tartar, you could feel sensitivity. We can apply a coating to prevent this sensitivity from affecting your daily life.
We recommend that you visit us every six months for a routine dental cleaning and exam. We may suggest more frequent visits if needed, and we also encourage you to contact us if you suffer from a dental emergency, pain or injury. To schedule your next appointment, we invite you to contact us today. We look forward to caring for your smile!
